So what is the ideal piece of exercise equipment to get for the home? The answers are many and depend on what your objectives are and how much time you have to dedicate to exercise. But for a great cardiovascular workout and general muscle toning, you can’t go wrong with choosing from the category of elliptical fitness equipment.
An elliptical machine incorporates leg and arm movement in a fashion that creates an increased heart rate combined with a repetitive muscle use. For overall fitness, there are very few methods of exercise that help you accomplish so much in relatively little time. 30 to 45 minutes, 3 of 4 days a week, spent doing elliptical exercise, can make a significant difference in how you look and feel.
If you are a member of a gym, then you probably have available to you various cardiovascular exercise machines, including and elliptical. Some of the more common and more highly rated machines are made by Star Trac, Precor and Cybex. These are commercial machines that are built for heavy, repeated use. In general a highly rated piece of commercial elliptical fitness equipment runs in the $5,000 to $6,000 range. They are not generally available in your typical sporting goods store. Check out internet sites to compare prices if you are considering buying one of these machines for home use.
Given the number of gyms that either fail or replace their equipment every few years, there is an entire industry built around the refurbishing and reselling of used exercise equipment. Elliptical exercise equipment is no exception. Shop around and you should be able to find any number of used commercial machines for 60-80% off their original prices. When shopping for used elliptical machines, or any other used equipment for that matter, try to get some kind of warranty from the seller. Also make sure that replacement parts are readily available.
If you are feeling a little more adventurous are adept at repairing machinery, or find the price sufficiently attractive, think about making a purchase from any of the various internet classified sites. These will rarely come with any kind of guarantee, but if the price is low enough, a purchase may be worth the risk.
Of course there are a number of brands of elliptical fitness equipment that can be readily found at most sporting good stores or department stores. These machines are built for home use and should not be subject to the same constant use and abuse of a commercial machine. In general, when you make a purchase of this type of equipment, you should roughly determine in advance how much you will be using it and what kind of feature are important to you.
Most brands that specialize in equipment for home use, offer a model that they label as semi-commercial, or something of that nature. These are typically a scaled down version, with a slightly smaller motor, than the commercial counterpart.
